But the only other cats who have been allowed to be housed in a separate room within St John's Cathedral have been found by staff who want them given to the newly created "homeshot" room.

It is thought the cat lovers have been hiding in the nearby St John's Cross, around the corner from their former home on Nandor St.

After more than four years of waiting for the project to be finished the church's reception will be set up in January.

Staff told MailOnline they want cat lovers to see more of those rescued - but said they were frustrated with the situation.

They said they would put up a petition to improve reception.

'Permanent homeshot' is a system where people in St John's will be held in the central building's guest rooms, with a new front door (called a home of "homely pets") opening and closed whenever there are vacancies.

One elderly carer said the place looked "pretty scary" because of the number of cats that would be placed there.
