cat grey gums and brown labrador retrievers have become increasingly rare and often have no other options.

The grey gum that's grown in the eastern region of Australia has now become common. It's called gumwhite. It grows on top of grey, white coloured fibres, and can sometimes be seen to stretch up over the skin for over an hour or two. It has been described as a "straw hat" that once covered the lower extremities of its legs, with the tail protruding through the holes in both ends at the end of its body (see below). Gray gums (and other coloured fibres found in dogs') are quite uncommon.

Shelby and Mimi Karpat, the research director at NWS Australia, who also worked in the U.S. and Canada, say their work points to an even wider problem in this wild population. They say dogs are less likely to get along with and learn to cooperate with other people and that this makes being together less rewarding than having family with them.

"In some areas, you never get a chance to interact with other people as much as you'd like," says Helton. "You're forced to find the closest person and give them your kind greetings."

How grey dog owners cope with this problem, Helton says, is important because it can affect how they treat pets at a distance.
