Police say the home where a dog came down on Halloween is now the only one in the country where a pet has been discovered dead.

A neighbour saw the animal fall into the garden and called police.

Det Insp Tim Kieck said: 'While our family is in the hospital the investigation continues.

'People have no idea what to make of it and are not prepared for this to happen again.'

But a local resident told the Huffington Post NZ he had heard about the incident at 11.45am and was 'thrilled to know about it'

The Pet Safety Council said it had received a report in New Plymouth of a home about to be burglarised

A dog and a cat was seen in the home on Friday, but the council believes the cat was not in the home

The council is still investigating the incident.

It emerged a homeowner heard screaming outside and called police.

He called a police station to report someone had reported the house was burglarised.

A police spokesman said: 'We cannot speak to the incident.

'The dog was found dead in the garden, but we are not sure about what is in there.

'A dog and a cat were reportedly involved but we are not sure what to make of it.'
