In the summer, however, some of the kittens tend in different directions from their larger siblings.

"Our female kittens are quite small," said Dr. Jan Korsgaard, an optometrist at the University of Southern Denmark, who has helped train six of the kittens. "They're very, very tiny but their body is huge and they develop rapidly for various lengths of time. They're almost like a miniature mouse. Korsgaard and her colleagues have seen how one puppy becomes an elderly cat, with its big head and little limbs as they grow into more mature versions. But she and her colleagues found that these babies also lack the capacity to adapt to young age and to socialise with others, as children do and older pet owners do. The kittens in which they were bred tended to make less noise than newborns, and that is the same for those that were bred for young-faced, large pets.

"The kittens looked cute when they appeared, although they probably didn't grow into the adult cats yet," said Dr. Gudmundsson, of Denmark's University
