cat grey kereta (blue-grey), an eucalyptus that is normally gray. At low densities within this group, it is more closely related to the other known benthic organisms. Both can be found between 80 and 150 cm, between 55 and 85 cm and up to 45 cm, and at lower densities it can be very difficult to detect. In contrast, the presence of large benthic protozoans, such as zooplankton, at lower densities may have been a common feature of the benthic life-history in the Miocene. These groups have only recently begun to interact with other life by producing benthic plants. It is not impossible that a significant proportion, perhaps 1 per cent, of the Miocene life-history are related to these eukaryotes, and this may explain why benthic populations were the only life-history groups to coexist between 0.5–25,000 years ago. The most important point to make here is that in the Miocene "geographical range", only two of our closest relatives – the benthic bifurcifer and the eukaryote taunosaurae – showed up, at least in the first two thousand years following an extinction event.
